Week 1

My name is Gina Pope.  I am a has been physical education teacher, a former financial analyst for Walmart Inc, and a current stay at home mom of 5. Now I am looking for a change again.  I have a wide range of interests but one thing that has always been a passion of mine is literature. So my goal is to attain my MEd with a concentration in English. I want to teach high school level English and creative writing, encouraging the next generation of great writers and creative minds.

For my assignment, I chose to pair OK standard 10.6.R.1, Students will use their own viable research questions and well-developed thesis statements to find information about a specific topic, with ITSE standard Knowledge Constructor 3A, Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits.

 Task

Students will have read Romeo and Juliet in class. When the reading has been completed, students will break into groups of 2-4. These groups will then compile a list of questions that they have about what life would have been like for Romeo and Juliet in the Renaissance. Once the lists are compiled, they will have a zoom meeting with a professors who specializes in the Renaissance times. They will then be able to ask their questions and gather any info from the professor that they can. After their meeting, they may utilize their computers to find answers to any other questions that they have. The final part of their assignment is to prepare a 5 minute comparative presentation using Google Slides. The presentation will need to cover the differences as well as the similarities of teens during the Renaissance and modern day teens.

While reading, Learning First, Technology Second, (Kolb. L, 2020), several major points stood out. One of those points was that technology needs to be used to enhance the main learning standard but not overshadow the main learning goal (Kolb, 2020 pg12). One of the other points that really stuck out was to avoid using technology just to use technology (Kolb2020 pg14). In the assignment I outlined above, my goal would be to have the technology be an aid in helping the students to dive deeper into the cultural and historical aspect of Romeo and Juliet. That by speaking with a subject matter expert, they gain a knowledge and possibly an interest in a time period that they had never studied before. and that by creating a comparative presentation that it would force the students to look further and analyze the text more deeply and to see details that is easily overlooked in harder to read works of writing. It would be my hope that through the assignment that they would attain a greater respect and understanding of Shakespeare and how his writings still apply today.

  1. Hello Gina!
Being a current third-grade classroom teacher, I find it challenging to keep student interest in a specific topic unless I use some form of technology. I think having the students use zoom to hear from a professor’s point of view about the subject would increase the effectiveness of the assignment. I also think having the students work together to create a video of their findings would be more meaningful to students.

  2. Hello there!
I think that is wonderful how your goal is to encourage the next generation of minds and writers, I am a playwright and I think we all can benefit from writing more and learning about writing.
I also love that you use a R and J exercise. I think incorporating Shakespeare is necessary in any literature class. Great job and I look forward to reading more post!

  3. Hello!

What a great use of technology. Incorporating a scholar knowledgeable in this time period is a an amazing way to show students that google is not the only place to find answers to their curious questions. Including professionals that get their historical content out through social media, like TikTok or Instagram, can also show students the variety places and styles in which historical information can be presented.

    Great job!
